American Gold Eagle Design and Coin Highlights
The Gold Eagle uses one of the most iconic works of art to ever appear on a United States coin. It was designed by the renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and first minted in 1907, originally appearing on $20 gold double eagle coins. To this day, the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin design is considered by many to be the most beautiful design to grace any U.S. coins. It's no surprise the image was adapted for of the obverse of the new American Gold Eagle bullion coins that debuted in 1986.
Lady Liberty is shown carrying a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. She strides forward toward the viewer confidently. Brilliant sun rays rise above the horizon behind Miss Liberty. The U.S. Capitol building can be seen off in the distance. The word LIBERTY runs across the top rim. From the time these coins were first produced up until 1991, the date was expressed in Roman numerals.
Beginning in 2021, a new reverse design was introduced to honor the 35th anniversary of the Gold Eagle series. It was designed by Jennie Norris and sculpted by U.S. Mint medallic artist Renata Gordon. The coin bears a detailed view of the head of a bald eagle. The coin's weight of "ONE OUNCE" and $50 face value are inscribed below. The motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" also appears above. The edge of the coin is reeded.
The new "Type 2" design replaced the original image created by sculptor Miley Busiek. This Type 1 design was used on the reverse side since the coins were first released in 1986. It showed a family of bald eagles: the male eagle carrying an olive branch flying toward a nest containing a female eagle and their eaglets.
Unlike most modern gold bullion coins, the American Gold Eagle is struck from .917 fine gold (22-karat gold). This makes the coin more durable and resistant to wear than a .999 fine gold coin (24-karat gold). The South African Gold Krugerrand is also 22 karats (91.67% gold), but the rest of the "crown gold" alloy is copper (8.3%). The Gold Eagle includes a small balance of 3% silver and 5.33% copper in its alloy. The diameter measures 32.7 mm and the coin is 2.87 mm thick.
Thanks to its gorgeous design and durability, the Gold Eagle is among the best gold coins to buy, seeing consistently high demand on the global market today. Proof Gold Eagles and Burnished Gold Eagles are made for collectors. They have lower mintage figures and bear a W mint mark for the West Point Mint in New York.
As per the Gold Bullion Coin Act passed by the United States Congress in 1985, investors can also buy American Eagle gold coins for the individual retirement account (IRA). The Silver Eagle is also eligible for IRA inclusion in an investment portfolio. All American Eagle coins are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States government. They can be purchased in Monster Boxes of 500 coins.
