The $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle holds a unique position in numismatic history as the only coin struck at all 7 US Mint facilities. Struck from .900 fine gold each Half Eagle yields .2418 troy ounces of pure gold and measures 21.6mm in diameter. Liberty Gold Half Eagles were minted between 1839 and 1908 and are also known as Liberty Heads.

The obverse is dominated by Christian Gobrecht's bust of Liberty wearing a coronet crown – giving the Liberty Head it's nickname. Around her are 13 stars for the 13 original colonies and the mint date at the foot. The Reverse shows a heraldic eagle and shield with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D” circling the rim. In 1866 the ribboned motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” was added to the reverse above the eagle.

Liberty Heads can be distinguished by their mint marks: Carson City (CC), Charlotte (C), Dahlonega (D), Denver (D), New Orleans (O), Philadelphia (no mint mark) and San Francisco (S).
