The Value of A 1930-S Buffalo Nickel

The 1930-S Buffalo nickel is common—more common than the small mintage might lead you to believe. This is due to the Great Depression’s effect on the economy stifling any demand for new coins. More Mint State coins were saved as they entered circulation in the mid-to-late 1930s than had been saved in previous years, making them not as difficult to find.

The usual San Francisco Mint Buffalo nickel strike shows weakness in the centers, and the 1930-S is no exception. This was a headwind that prevented more coins from achieving Gem Uncirculated status of MS65 or higher.
