The Value of A 1938-D Buffalo Nickel

The 1938-D Buffalo nickel was the last of its kind. The second part of the double-dip depression that hit in 1937 reduced the need for new nickels, so Denver filled the gap while preparations were made to introduce the new Jefferson nickel.

Since everyone knew that this was the last Buffalo nickel mintage, a large portion of the 1938-D was set aside in rolls. Prices on high-grade Mint State examples are low for each grade, with tens of thousands of MS66 graded. Be aware that strike quality was all over the place, so cherry picking is rewarded.
