The 1968-D was the first Denver nickel since 1964 to carry the D mintmark. A small change in the Jefferson nickel design moved the mintmark from the far right next to Monticello on the reverse, to the obverse near the right rim, beneath the date and to the right of the tip of Jefferson’s ponytail.
